The rate of arti­fi­ci­al­ly indu­ced births in Ger­ma­ny is now well over 20% and is con­ti­nuous­ly incre­asing. A very lar­ge part of the­se labor induc­tions occurs becau­se a cer­tain gesta­tio­nal age has been rea­ched and is thus not suf­fi­ci­ent­ly medi­cal­ly indi­ca­ted. This pro­blem is the­r­e­fo­re one of the most important chal­lenges of modern obste­trics and is at the same time one of the grea­test risk fac­tors.

The spea­k­er deals in detail with the cau­ses of the high induc­tion rate, with misun­ders­tood sci­en­ti­fi­ci­ty, with the dan­gers of this prac­ti­ce, and with pos­si­ble ways out. He goes into detail about stra­te­gies for avo­i­ding unneces­sa­ry labor induc­tions and the per­spec­ti­ve of pre­na­tal psy­cho­lo­gy on this pro­blem.
